A friend of mine – the infamously Pokemon terrorist Lord Omlette aka Jean Luc Pikachu – writes:
This is supposedly a student film, but tell me this isn’t exactly the sort of propaganda that Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman would pay out the ass for.
Robots are not human. They are not frail. They are ROBOTS for fuck’s sake! They kill and destroy because that is all robots know how to do! Robots are coming to kill us all and failure to understand that dooms us all.
He said this in response to the student film No Robots. He later writes this:
A robot will never understand love because robots are death machines programmed with one and only one thing in mind: murder. What the author of the quoted material describes as “lovotics” appears to be limited to teledildonics. In other words, there’s no need for a new word.
He said that in response to the use of the word “lovotics.”
I’m writing this not only to laugh at his increasing paranoia involving smart robots (robotic androids), but because it’s not an uncommon fear in real circles as well. People are afraid of robots because they are robots. Something new. Something indestructable. I blame everything Terminator-related not getting the real message across. My unease at AI and robots has nothing do with robots per se, but the reason why intelligent robots would be a problem.
My issue with intelligent, sentient robots is that we create them. There’s a human component in every AI and robot that’s going to come out of the first generation (and possibly the second and third generations). The problem is that humans barely know anything other than killing and destroying and covetting. The best robot and AI we ever produce will learn from its teachers – the human race. The human race is a mess, thus the best AI and robot will be a mess. Thus, we shouldn’t build these things until we are no longer killing, destroying and generally being a total mess.
That’s what Terminator is trying to tell us – SKYNET isn’t evil because it’s an AI, and the Terminators are inherently evil because they are machines. SKYNET and the robots of the future are the bad guys because we – the flawed and contentious race we are – built, programmed and then taught them! Same for The Matrix. The robots win because of humanity’s hubris and inability to understand that our creations will always be a reflection of the best and worst in us.
Battlestar Galactica doubly so – Cylons reflect our hatred and bias for each other. We built them to do the shit we don’t want to do and made them intelligent enough to understand that. They watched and learned from our society. They learned about freedom. And racism. Then they learned they don’t have to do that shit anymore, and we try to destroy them (because we’re anti-robot racists). And then they got religion, learning fanaticism and everything went to Hell really fast.
If anything, we’re doomed – robots or no – because we can’t control ourselves and our own stupidity.
But I think Lord Omlette just hates robots because he has a fear that – subconsciously – he’s a gay robot.
EDIT: Oh, yeah, this might be a little late but – HEY SPARKY LOOK OUT FOR THE BLIZZARD WE HAD A FEW DAYS AGO THAT BURIED MOST OF THE MIDWEST IN 12 INCES OF SNOW. Better late than never, I guess.
