If you haven’t already heard the news, here’s the gist of it:
DC announced they are going to release direct download of all their montly comics going forward on the same day they release the printed comic. Marvel will pretty much do the same thing sooner or later. Much like the article I posted, it does read that – soon – printed monthly comics will go away.
I also have a problem with this. Not only is it the death of the local comic book store (which also doubles at your local friendly game store), it is the death of collectability. I don’t buy-to-read comics books – I buy-to-collect comic books. What happens is that the value of all printed comics then skyrockets. Which is great if you have everything and want to sell one day, but bad if you are still hoping to get this issue or that issue. Or are a bibliophile (desire physical books over digital ones).
And then there’s the matter of Internet piracy. It’s already a factor – now it will be a major problem. They’ll lose more money if it completely relies on the Internet as an exchange.
Who knows. Maybe it won’t be a problem. Maybe it will. But I don’t think it will last or work for very long.
