So yeah, if you haven’t heard, then you’re basically living in a remote part of the world and even my blog can’t reach you. But yes, Osama bin Laden is dead.
So, after reading a few public reports – and a few not so public reports – the Pakistani military is saying that our concentrated drone strikes on the militants along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border forced Osama bin Laden to hide “in plain sight” in a complex built just for this purpose. The US let them in on the raid just moments before SEAL Team Six (who are all up for the Medal of Honor) lifted off. When they landed – in a city that houses Pakistan’s equivalent of West Point – the SEALs stormed the compound and shot him in the head. They also killed Osama’s son, TWO other men, and wounded a woman (likely Osama’s youngest wife) who was being used as a bullet shield. They took a great deal of information from the compound and turned over the rest to the Pakistani military.
In a rather morbid display, Americans everywhere celebrated the death of a mass murderer and terrorist. I mean, I understand and I even feel a little better that Osama’s gone, but I wouldn’t go dance in the streets. Politicians are all agreeing about the benefit, and most* are congratulating both the US military and President Obama.
I’m interested in Al-Q’s response and retribution. Their Jyhadist bloggers have basically conceded Osama’s death, and promised death. I honestly don’t know if they will do it right away or if it will have to wait. I mean, despite the West saying, “This guy’s#2 and this guy’s #3,” when talking about leadership, Osama was the thin thread that the different groups of Al-Q were united under. I’m sure there’ll be a struggle as two or three leaders in the organization try to claim the top spot, and then they have to address fund-raising and how to keep appealing to the people when it’s obvious your enemy won’t stop until you are dead.
Now the entire promotion scheme in the Pentagon and CIA makes more sense – the POTUS knew that those guys had run an operation to force Osama into a bad place, and that increased the odds of killing him 100 fold. You would have to reward the people enacting this strategy, since it worked. It’s unfortunate that Bush didn’t get to claim the victory on his watch, but them’s the breaks.
