Mark Addy said that A Game of Thrones is the adult version of Lord of the Rings. That’s not an adequate description – Lord of the Rings is definitely not kid friendly, as it involves murder, rape, violence, slavery, disfiguration and things like ghosts and ghouls. If I had to describe the difference between the two, it’s that A Game of Thrones is more about politics and Machavellian conflict than full-bore fantasy. It’s more of a realistic medieval world with some fantasy sprinkled in, which LotR is the exact opposite. It’s a little more brainy. And somewhat a little more tedious. If anything is similar, it’s that Sean Bean dies pretty quickly in both stories (he’s Boromir in LotR, and Eddard Stark in AGoT … Oops, spoiler alert!)
I hate being critical of Christians, because the reality is that only 50% of them are horrible people using God as an excuse to be horrible people. However, it’s things like this that convince me that the Catholic Church is truly unredeemable. Stop protecting pedophiles and moronic decisions made by political popes. JFC FFS.
Tip for Tyrants: If you are beaten down and losing your claim to legitimacy, do not hole up in a bunker under your presidential palace. Eventually, they’ll just surround you and burn you out of your bunker like a rat out of a nest. Seriously, get on a plane and RUN AWAY.
