Apparently, there are a lot of people who think anything on the Internet is “public domain” that can just be taken and used elsewhere without permission. I’m not sure where this idea comes from – save perhaps most people on the Internet are now pirates in some form or another, which then gives them the impression they can just do whatever they like.
There’s a law called copyright protection. Anything you create is yours, and people have to ask permission before making money off your creation. You should probably even ask to be paid for it (unless it’s crap, then I don’t know why anyone would steal it, etc.) Still, the woman who ran this magazine should have understood protected content law and known that the Internet does not give you the right to copy other’s work without permission. She was just being stupid and sloppy.
And the Internet never forgets/forgives. As their collapsed website and Facebook page prove.
