I would like to just take a moment to comment about all the bickering going on about Fallout 3 by die-hard Fallout 1 & 2 fans and the other half who have never bought the original games who will enjoy a twist on post-apaco games.
My very first “personal computer” as such was a tape-driven thing. My second PC was the Apple IIc. Now on the Apple IIc, EA produced this game called Wastelands. Instantly hooked. When Fallout came out, instantly hooked. Fallout 2 I was less enthusiastic about. I didn’t buy Brotherhood of Steel because I didn’t have a machine to play it on at the time.
Die hard Fallout fans
You need to let go of the old Fallout isometric/turn-based game system of the 80’s/90’s. You need to realize that what’s going to happen is that they are going to slate Fallout 3 to try and appease you, but drag in a whole new crowd to the story. The newer crowd likes FPS/actions/RTS games. Most don’t know what isometric means. Most barely understand turn-based.
Fallout isn’t about the god-damn game engine. It’s about the story and the roleplaying that goes with it. If Bethsda gives me a game that has the flavor and story of the first two, I’m game. If they can put the Perks, Traits and Skills of the old games into an engine that will reflect those things working, I’m game. Those are the things that made Fallout Fallout. Not Interplay’s ancient turn-based, isometric game engine. Jesus fuck. STFU about that already.
Also, I think a lot of you want to covet Fallout 3 to the people who played the first two. You don’t really want any noobs to be playing your Fallout. Well, fuck that and fuck you, you greedy old codgers. It’s not your Fallout – it belongs to whoever owns the liscense to the series. Oh, and the RIAA is on-action to sue the Czech’s making the Fallout clones. So that’s going to not happen anytime soon.
New Fallout Fans
I appreciate your new enthusiasm for the game, but don’t push for it to totally depart from the old story or the old theme. I get the feeling that you guys don’t care about that stuff, but at least the other half does. So let’s meet in the middle somewhere. And patience, grasshoppers.
Basically, the old fans need to stop being myopic fucksacks and let someone do something to rekindle the Fallout flame. Fallout will never be EXACTLY LIKE THE FIRST TWO, so grow up and join us in the 21st century, k?
